I’m not sure whether the term self help is a help or a hindrance sometimes. It infers that a person should be able to help themselves and do the right thing. This may be the case when a person has sufficient mental and emotional capacity but not when they are, for example, psychotic or have habitually deeply ingrained patterns. For my own part I believe that there are some things that I can do about myself but that the fundamental change comes from a change in spiritual value and awareness. This cannot always be ‘done’ for ones self, and is why I need some other point of reference apart from myself. Having said that, I acknowledge the wonderful world of self help books but do not put my complete faith in them as they assume that you are ‘sane’ to start with. And so ‘only’ need to change your attitude.
